Root Canals

Root canals

At Sri Bhaskara Eye and Dental Clinics, we prioritize your oral health and comfort. One of the essential treatments we offer for saving and preserving your natural teeth is the root canal. This procedure is designed to treat and save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected, preventing the need for extraction.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure used to remove infected or damaged tissue from inside the tooth. This tissue, known as the pulp, contains nerves and blood vessels that can become infected due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma. When the pulp is infected, it can cause severe pain and lead to abscesses or tooth loss if left untreated.

Why Do You Need a Root Canal?

You may need a root canal if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Severe toothache, especially when chewing or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
  • A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums

These symptoms indicate that the pulp inside the tooth is damaged or infected, and a root canal may be necessary to remove the infection and save the tooth.

The Root Canal Procedure

The root canal procedure typically involves the following steps:

  • Diagnosis and Preparation:

    • Our dentist will examine your tooth and take X-rays to determine the extent of the infection and plan the treatment.
    • Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area, ensuring a comfortable and pain-free experience.
  • Cleaning the Tooth:

    • A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber.
    • The infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed, and the root canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped.
  • Filling the Canals:

    • The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This material helps seal the canals and prevent future infections.
    • The tooth is then sealed with a temporary filling.
  • Restoration:

    • In a subsequent visit, a permanent filling or crown is placed on the tooth to restore its function and appearance. A crown is often recommended for teeth that have undergone root canal treatment, as it provides additional strength and protection.
